Genre - Thriller
Common plots in thriller movies is the protagonist has to overcome numerous obstacles that prevents him/her from succeeding and still ending up in losing someone/something he/she loves.
Some of the primary feature of a thriller movie are strong feelings of excitement, anxiety, tension, suspense, fear. Which all fall into the category of Thriller / Crime genre.
For example: Get out
A lot of connotation and first person perspective is used to intrigue the audience, and to give them a more realistic experience. But also not to have the audience too confused on what's happening, They usually give the gods view and reveal the thoughts and ideas of the other characters.
Usually the anticipation and anxiety of the plot leaves the audience on -
‘the verge of the chair’
Based on the research I have done, warm colour lighting is used only to contrast to the main plot of the movie, but the primary colour palette is cold colours in particular a blueish filter. This is to bring an atmospheric suspense and an unappealing view audience.
Usually the shots are long, slow and uncut. This is used for creating suspense and tension which often resolves with a sudden change of speed and more jump-cuts, action and movement. This is to resolve the buildup suspension.

The purpose of Genre:
Genre provides a template.
To warranty pleasure and meaning for the audience.
To reduce financial risks of film production, can estimate how much it will cost.
Genre must relate to socio-economic and cultural situations of a country.
Specific genre must follow its individual conventions and stereotypes. A film must match the genre’s conventions to be identified as part of that genre.
Genre is constituted by specific systems of expectations and hypothesis which spectators bring with them to the cinema and which and which interact with the films themselves during the course of the viewing process.
Genre does not just refer to the film type but to the spectators expectations (Steve Neale)

In the clip above. We can see that it clearly falls into the category of thriller movie, the mise-en-scène is dark and dull, rain is representing the melancholy atmosphere. The director had subverted the audiences expectation of the clown. from a traditional entertaining funny clown to a Beast. The conversation is being cut by 'cut counter cut' and over-shoulder shots. there is minimal to no movement slowing down the tempo of the scenery causing a build up in tention and suspense which resolves with the child getting eaten. the make up of the clown is very pale and disturbing to look at, and the prop used is a paper boat which represents a valuable item that the child is trying to get back. the jump cuts are switching between low angles and high angle shots. The depth of field is relatively shallow. The colour contrast of the clothing is rather drastic as the child is in yellow which represents warm and welcoming in contrast the dirty white shows threat and danger.
For our project, we were consdering to either do comdey action or horror thriller genre. The key conventions for horror genre is easier to replicate such as high pitched noises, distotioin and oppression. This would be easy achieved through low camera angles, low key lighting and back lit character to create a silhouette of the character. - Me and Myryl temporary agreed that thriller genre would be the easiest to create footage.
